3 Cornwall pub beer gardens among UK’s best for ‘jaw-dropping views’

The Old Coastguard, Mousehole

The Old Coastguard can be found in the fishing village of Mousehole, with its beer garden overlooking Mounts Bay.

Its “tropical garden” boasts scenic sights with its glass barrier giving uninterrupted views of St Clements Isle.

Muddy Stilettos adds: “In good weather there can be nowhere else like it. In bad weather sit indoors from the lower deck and enjoy some storm watching.

“The terrace, under the Tom Leaper statue, is a wonderful place for sundowners, and The Crab Shack is a super-informal foodie delight, open daily (unless the weather is truly awful) from 10am until late.”

As well as being a restaurant/pub, The Old Coastguard is also a hotel, which has 14 bedrooms looking out over the water.

Overall, the establishment has been well-received, with it earning a 4.3/5 score on Tripadvisor from 699 reviews.

One visitor wrote: “The Old Coastguard is in the most wonderful setting perched on the cliffs high above Mousehole – I was lucky enough to visit on a sunny day and the gardens were like somewhere in the Med!

“Beautiful views over Mounts Bay, and of the working fishing boats from out of Newlyn.”

Another said: “This was our second stay at The Old Coastguard and we couldn’t fault it. Lovely, helpful staff who are on hand to help. The rooms are lovely and spacious.

“Breakfast was included with our stay, lots of choice and really delicious. We also love having a drink in the garden area overlooking the sea.”

A third shared: “I frequent the OC regularly and am never disappointed, from a cheeky pint in the garden, or down back looking out to sea, I’m always happy with the staff, beer selection (and obscure gins) and the food is cracking.”

Lewinnick Lodge, Newquay

Lewinnick Lodge is “perched on the East Pentire headland” just south of Newquay and is described as a “quiet and rugged” place.

The cliff-side terrace and decking make it a great spot to enjoy a pint or an alfresco lunch/dinner.

Alongside that, the “talented chef team” makes seasonal dishes that “celebrates the flavours on their doorstep”.

Lewinnick Lodge is also a boutique hotel as well as a pub/restaurant which offers a “smooth blend of comfort and style” according to its website.
