Cornwall currently has 21 Covid hotspots

Seven areas of Cornwall have more than five Covid-19 cases.

According to the latest data from the Government and Public Health England, published on Sunday (December 7), there were 21 clusters in Cornwall – areas where three or more coronavirus cases have been reported – between November 25 and December 1.

The figures show that Truro was the area with the most cases in Cornwall. Truro South and Central recorded eleven cases while Truro West had four.

The two areas with the second highest number of cases were Callington & Pensilva and St Columb Minor & Porth, with nine cases each.

Newquay West and Bude & Stratton recorded six cases each.

Two areas recorded five cases each: Launceston and St Columb Major & St Mawgan.

Areas not listed are classified as “data suppressed” in the Government data, meaning that those areas have between zero and two cases and the data isn’t published in order to protect the privacy of individuals involved.

Yesterday’s update covers the week from November 25 to December 1, meaning positive tests reported on November 24 no longer appear in the statistics.

What is a coronavirus cluster?

The Government’s coronavirus cluster map splits the country into areas of roughly 7,500 people, based on the 2011 census, known as Middle Super Output Areas (MSOAs).

The map highlights areas where three or more coronavirus cases have been reported for a week period, with the numbers coming off of the map a week after being confirmed positive.

Areas not highlighted do not necessarily have no coronavirus cases in them, as the data does not highlight or count areas with less than three cases in order to protect individuals privacy – meaning that if an area has one or two cases, it will display as 0 to 2 cases.
