Overview

Join us in Truro to spark your soul and keep the flame of inspiration burning bright!

Featuring: Dublin Brass, Eimear Quinn, Jim Causley, Loveny Male Voice Choir and the Kate Rogers Creative Academy.

Renowned brass quintet Dublin Brass has joined forces with international singer-songwriter Eimear Quinn, folk artist Jim Causley and the local Loveny Male Voice Choir and the Kate Rogers Creative Academy for a very special candlelit concert in Truro.

The concert takes place at 7.30pm on Tuesday 17 March (Saint Patrick’s Day) in Truro’s beautiful cathedral, which sets off the broad range of instruments, Eimear’s ethereal voice and the harmonious local singers.

‘We’re delighted to be performing together,’ says Will Palmer, founder and artistic director of Dublin Brass. ‘This concert is going to be a real treat. You’re invited to sit back, relax and enjoy a candlelit evening of traditional Irish music specially reimagined for voice and brass.’

Dublin Brass features members of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and leading freelance musicians from around Ireland. The ensemble is joined for the evening by percussion, harp, violin and viola players, bringing traditional Irish sounds to the programme. Songs include My Lagan Love, The Voice, Mise Eire, and music from the Oscar-nominated ‘Room’.

Eimear Quinn is well known in Ireland and internationally as a singer and composer. She won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1996, and since then has toured and performed extensively, including before royalty and presidents. ‘It is a true pleasure for me to sing with the Dublin Brass Ensemble for the Breath Upon The Flame concerts,’ she says. ‘Performing these beautiful folk songs in the unique context of traditional instruments and classical brass in the glorious setting of Truro Cathedral – I’m in my element!’

Jim Causley is a folk singer, award-winning songwriter, musician, proud Devonian and all-round entertainer. He grew up in a wassailing village not far from Sidmouth Folk Festival and sang with local choirs before heading to Newcastle University for a degree in Folk and Traditional Music. In recent years his work has focused on his musical settings of poems by his relative Charles Causley, penning his own songs and reviving lost gems from his home county.

Loveny Male Voice Choir is based in the picturesque Cornish village of St Neot and are conducted by Matt Harrison. Matt is an experienced professional musician, conductor and event organiser – and a fine trombonist.

The talented Kate Rogers Creative Academy are also based in St Neot, with academy members aged 7–14 working collaboratively as a team while building self-awareness, musicality, confidence, and strong stage skills through expressive singing and performance.

Breath Upon The Flame Truro is one of just three such concerts taking place this spring across south-west England, each accompanied by choirs local to the concert venues. The others are in Chagford, Devon, at St Michael the Archangel Church, on 16 March and at Bristol Cathedral on 14 March.
