The rich history of the Cornish Hedge: A talk by Ann Reynalds

Saturday 10th February 2024

10am – 12pm
£8/£5 concessions *
At Kresen Kernow, Dowr Room

This talk will look at how we can read the landscape through its field boundaries and patterns to discover clues of age and past land use. Looking at Cornish Hedges as archaeological features we can understand how they were built and maintained in the past and how they reflect local character and distinctiveness. Examples of how they re-used earlier features and were adapted to support agricultural functions will be given, allowing participants to discover the not so hidden heritage of rural Cornwall on their own doorsteps through the rich history of the Cornish hedge.
About the speaker: Ann Reynolds is the Senior Officer for the Rural Historic Environment in Cornwall Council’s Strategic Historic Environment Team. With almost 30 years experience of working in the Cornish Landscape, she has worked extensively on the rural heritage of Cornwall. Through talking to past and present hedgers and farmers and from carrying archaeological recording of hundreds of field boundaries, she has developed a particular interest in the promotion of the historical value of Cornish Hedges.
Please book early to avoid disappointment, please note that Kresen Kernow will not be able to provide you with a booking, tickets are only available through CREST, so please use the link or contact us. Cornwall Rural Education & Skills Trust CIO, known as CREST, was founded this year to address the need for training in the endangered craft of Cornish hedging and raise awareness of the rich value of hedges in the landscape. With funding support from the Cornwall AONB Farming in Protected Landscapes programme (FiPL), CREST works in partnership with Cornwall Heritage Trust to deliver a training and education programme in Cornish hedging, with future plans to embrace other Cornish rural crafts and countryside skills.
