Fake environmental health officer racially abuses takeaway staff

A warning has been issued after a person claiming to be from Environmental Health approached food premises in Cornwall impersonating a council officer and racially abused staff.

The first incident was at a Newquay restaurant where a staff member was approached by someone claiming to be from Environmental Health. He did not give any further details at that time and hasn’t returned.

The second was at a takeaway food business in Newquay where the manager said someone phoned them at around 10pm claiming to be from Environmental Health investigating food poisoning and wanting to make an appointment to visit within the hour.

When no one turned up they returned the call, and the bogus officer was racially abusive.

Cornwall Council’s food safety team has reported the incidents to the police and has the phone number from the second incident.
