Latest coronavirus clusters and case update for Cornwall

Cornwall has seen a further 76 positive Covid-19 cases in the latest daily figures on Wednesday (December 16), up from 48 reported on Monday.

The data is made up of the number of people with at least one positive Covid-19 test result, either lab-reported or from a lateral flow device, by specimen date.

Those who test positive more than once are only counted once, on the date of their first positive test.

Wednesday’s figures show 277 new coronavirus cases confirmed in Devon and Cornwall – the highest number since November 17.

Today, CornwallLive reported that two people have died of Coronavirus at Royal Cornwall Hospital, according to NHS figures released today.

These are the first Covid-related deaths recorded in Cornwall since a death on December 2, which itself was the first in nearly two weeks.

The total number of patients who have died at Treliske after testing positive for Coronavirus now stands at 73 since the start of the pandemic.

The NHS continues it phased roll-out of the vaccination programme, with GP practices working in groups to set up local vaccination centres for their patients, which will open in stages over coming weeks.

The first phase of GP-led vaccination centres in Devon will see the opening of eight sites serving 49 of the county’s practices.

Residents and business owners across Cornwall are anxiously waiting to hear about the latest changes to England’s three-tier system as it is currently being reviewed by the Government.

It has already been announced that Greater London and parts of Essex and Hertfordshire are moving into Tier 3, the highest level of restrictions.

Since the end of the second national lockdown on December 2, Cornwall has been in Tier 1, the lowest tier of coronavirus restrictions. This meant that Cornish pubs, restaurants, hairdressers, shops, gyms, and even live sport events all reopened – albeit within limits.

Meanwhile neighbouring Plymouth and the rest of Devon was put into Tier 2 and given more restrictions.

It is not currently known if the region will be placed in different tiers once the Government review is over.
