New meadery restaurant looks set to open in Cornish town

A new meadery looks set to open its doors in west Cornwall when government guidance permits.

A meadery is a unique Cornish dining experience usually found in west Cornwall with Newlyn near Penzance and Redruth among the busiest.

It now appears Helston is getting in on the action after a huge sign was placed outside a former pizza restaurant that reads “The Helston Meadery opening soon”.

The building in question was most recently The Reel Pizza Company, a pizza and tapas restaurant situated next door to the town’s cinema on Wendron Street.

The news looks all but confirmed after the director of The Reel Pizza Company formally changed its name on Companies House to Helston Meadery Ltd.

Meadery restaurants are modelled on a medieval dining halls with wooden tables and floors, low lighting (usually candles) and serving wenches.

Diners rarely leave hungry or thirsty thanks to the hearty servings of no frills food and lashings of deceptively strong mead wine.
