People urged to avoid area of Penzance where car has crashed

Police are advising people to avoid the area surrounding Western Promenade Road in Penzance following a car crash which is said to be “serious”.

Reports of an overturned vehicle has led to a road closure and caused heavy traffic to build up after police, ambulance and fire engines arrived on the scene at around 6.10pm today (April 7).

Traffic monitoring website Inrix says it is a van that has overturned, but witnesses at the scene have told CornwallLive that it is a car.

An air ambulance was later seen arriving in the town to assist with the casualty, who witnesses say is being treated by paramedics.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police has said: “There has been a road traffic collision.

“It’s fair to say it’s a serious accident and we are giving people a message to avoid the area.”

No update has been provided on the person who was inside the vehicle.

The vehicle was reported to have overturned from Queen Street to Alexandra Road.

A post on Inrix says: “Western Promenade Road in both directions closed, heavy traffic due to overturned van from Queen Street to Alexandra Road.

“Police confirm the road was closed at 6.10pm, affecting traffic heading in and out of Penzance.
