Snow and sleet set to hit Cornwall this weekend

There is also a yellow weather warning for ice for all of Cornwall apart from Land’s End and up the north coast, from this evening until tomorrow morning.

This then becomes a yellow warning for snow on ice on Sunday into Monday.

While some areas of Cornwall are expected to see light snowfall, others will mainly experience sleet showers, with cold temperatures increasing the risk of icy conditions, particularly overnight and into early next week.

In Launceston, sleet showers are forecast from 2am until 2pm on Saturday, January 3. Snow showers are then expected between 3pm and 4pm on Saturday, before returning at 4am and 8am on Sunday. Overnight sleet showers are forecast to continue into the early hours of Monday.

The Met Office predicts that temperatures in Launceston are set to fall as low as -3°C on Sunday morning.

Bodmin is also expected to see a weekend of colder conditions. Sleet showers are forecast from 2am until 2pm on Saturday, followed by light snow showers between 3pm and 6pm. From the early hours of Sunday, Bodmin will experience a period of mixed snow and sleet, continuing into Monday until around 1pm.

Elsewhere in Cornwall the outlook is slightly milder, with sleet rather than snow. Periods of sleet showers are forecast from 8am on Saturday through to 5am on Monday. However, the Met Office says there will be occasional dry spells between showers.

After a brief break, sleet showers are forecast to return overnight on Sunday, with further wintry sleet showers expected in the early hours of Monday.

A yellow weather warning for ice has been put in place for the Met Office from 6pm tonight (Friday) until 10am tomorrow (Saturday).

This then becomes a yellow warning for snow and ice from 3pm on Sunday until 12 noon on Monday.

What should you expect?

  • Likely some icy stretches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

What the Met Office says

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Showers of rain, sleet and some snow, the latter mainly over higher ground, will affect parts of southwest England during Friday evening and overnight into Saturday morning. Where showers occur, icy stretches will develop on untreated surfaces.

“Whilst many areas will see little accumulating snow, there is potential for a cm or two of snow over Bodmin Moor, the west of Dartmoor and Exmoor.

“Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.

“If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.

“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

“Be prepared for weather warnings to change: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”
