Waves of up to 14ft expected in Cornwall after overnight flooding

Huge waves of up to 14ft are set to batter the coast of Cornwall later today (Tuesday, October 20).

Last night, flooding was reported in places including Portmellon, near Mevagissey after flood warnings for much of the coast of Cornwall.

The alerts, issued by the Environment Agency, read: “Flooding is expected over the high tides on Monday evening, 19/10/20 and Tuesday morning, 20/10/20.

“High Spring tides, strong winds and large waves are expected to cause property flooding in low lying or exposed locations on Monday evening and Tuesday morning.”

The Environment Agency said locations particularly at risk include Mousehole, Newlyn, Penzance Promenade, Chyandour, Long Rock. and Porthleven, Mevagissey, Portmellon, Gorran Haven and St Mawes.

And, this afternoon, surfers and beach walkers will have to be careful as some waves are expected to reach up to 14ft.
