IN THE DOCK: Cases heard at Cornwall Magistrates Court this week

Isoan Alli, aged 23, of Polmeere Road, Penzance

Alli pleaded guilty to having a kitchen steak knife with him without good reason while in a public place, Polmeere Road, Penzance, on February 8, 2025.

The court was told the cutting edge of the blade exceeded 7.62 centimetres (three inches).

Magistrates sentenced Alli to complete a mental health treatment programme for up to 20 days across 12 months.

He was also fined £120 and the knife will be destroyed.

Alli was ordered to pay £85 towards Crown Prosecution Service costs, and a £114 surcharge to fund victim services.

His guilty plea was taken into account when sentencing.

Shay Iles, aged 19, of Fore Street, Pool

Iles pleaded guilty to breaching a restraining order when he appeared before magistrates on Thursday (April 17).

The court heard that on Wednesday of this week (April 16) he had entered an address in Bodmin which he was prohibited from doing by a restraining order made by magistrates in Bodmin on July 24, 2024.

Iles was fined £80, with his guilty plea taken into account.

Kieran Leverett, aged 41, of Blowing House Close, St Austell

Leverett was sentenced on April 15, 2025, after admitting to breaching a community order.

The court heard that he had failed without reasonable excuse to comply with the requirements of a community order originally imposed by Cornwall (Bodmin) Magistrates Court on January 17, 2025.

Leverett failed to attend mandatory supervision appointments on February 26, and March 12.

The court noted he failed to provide an acceptable reason or evidence for these absences within the required five working days, breaching Part 2 of Schedule 10 to the Sentencing Act 2020.

Having admitted the breach, Leverett was fined £80. An application was made for this sum to be recovered via benefit reduction.

He is required to pay the fine at a rate of £20 per month, commencing July 15, 2025.

People from Cornwall have also been getting into trouble in other courts around the country.

Thomas Smith, aged 23, of Johns Corner, Penzance

Smith was sentenced at Liverpool & Knowsley Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour with the intent to cause fear of or provoke unlawful violence.

He admitted committing the offence on Telegraph Road in Heswall, Wirral on September 6, 2024.

The court heard he used threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour towards the victim, or another person, intending to cause them to believe immediate unlawful violence would be used against them, or to provoke such violence. This contravened section 4(1)(a) and (4) of the Public Order Act 1986.

The court determined the offence was aggravated due to the victim’s sexual orientation, based on the words used by Smith. This factor led to an increased fine.

Taking his guilty plea into account, magistrates fined him £634 and ordered him to pay £85 towards Crown Prosecution Service costs.
