The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind, in place for Wednesday between 7am and midnight.
However, it’s the change in temperatures that’s causing further concern. Local weather experts, the Kernow Weather Team, have provided more information on what’s to come, forecasting a chilly turn of events starting on Thursday.
According to the Kernow Weather Team, a deep area of low pressure will track across the UK, tightening isobars, and bringing strong winds.
Wind gusts of 60-85+mph are very likely around coasts and hills, and 50-60mph gusts are likely fairly widely inland, with gales to storm force winds expected through Wednesday afternoon until the early hours of Thursday.
The winds will transition from a Southwesterly to a Northwesterly by Thursday. Heavy rainfall is also expected on Wednesday, with some locations seeing between 10-30mm of rain.
This weather system is not just bringing wind and rain. It’s initiating a battle of air masses. Initially, the low pressure will draw in Tropical Maritime Air, keeping temperatures relatively mild for a time.
However, by Thursday, this will all change. The low-pressure system will pull in a Polar Maritime Air Mass from the Northwest, causing a rapid plunge in temperatures.
Daytime temperatures on Thursday are expected to be between 0°C and 4°C, however, with ‘feels like’ temperatures potentially dropping as low as -6°C in some areas.
The cold air will increase further by the early hours of Friday morning, with a few locations around Cornwall potentially dropping to -4°C, creating a significant risk of frost and ice.
Kernow Weather Team noted that this system is not currently a named storm, despite reports on other websites.
